Scapular dyskinesia

Scapular dyskinesia is a condition in which the natural movement and alignment of the shoulder blade are impaired. Causes may include, amongst other things, muscle weakness or imbalances, overuse, injuries or disorders affecting the nerves supplying the shoulder. Other shoulder conditions, such as rotator cuff tears, instability or restricted movement, can also lead to altered scapular movement.
Treatment is conservative in most cases. The focus is on targeted physiotherapy with a regular exercise programme designed to activate and strengthen the scapular muscles and improve coordination of movement. At the same time, any underlying shoulder problems are treated specifically. Surgical treatment is only rarely required in cases of severe or persistent symptoms.
At Ortho am See, we carry out a targeted examination of the shoulder and scapula to identify the cause of the movement disorder as accurately as possible. On this basis, we can then offer a personalised treatment plan tailored to the specific cause.
