AC joint dislocation
An AC joint dislocation (dislocation of the acromioclavicular joint) results in damage to the stabilising ligaments between the collarbone and the acromion. The injury is often caused by a direct fall onto the shoulder, for example whilst playing sport or in an accident. Depending on the severity, the AC joint may be only slightly injured or significantly unstable. In more severe cases, the collarbone may appear to be raised.
Treatment depends on the extent of the injury, the symptoms, and the individual’s physical and sporting requirements. Many AC joint injuries can be treated conservatively with pain management, temporary immobilisation and targeted physiotherapy.
In cases of severe instability, persistent symptoms or high functional demands, surgical stabilisation of the AC joint may be advisable. Depending on the injury, this can be carried out using minimally invasive techniques. The aim of treatment is to restore the stability and function of the shoulder and to enable a return to everyday life, work and sport that is as pain-free as possible.
