Hammer toes

Definition and symptoms

Small, but often very painful. This is a brief description of hammer toes, which are often the reason for a visit to the podiatrist.

Similar to hallux valgus, the symptoms are well known: the middle joint (usually of the second toe) is increasingly raised and stiffens in this position over time, while the end joint is hyperextended. The pressure of the shoes eventually causes corns on the top of the toes, which further increase the pressure pain and can even lead to open sores and infections.

Padding and corn plasters are of no use in such a situation, as the additional material exerts even more pressure on the already painful area.

Most common causes

The development of a hammer toe is often caused by a concomitant hallux valgus, which pushes the toe upwards and backwards. Over time, the malposition becomes fixed and leads to the above-mentioned symptoms. Ultimately, surgery is essential for correction.

Treatment methods

There are various treatment options available today, for example

  • The middle joint is so damaged (an actual stiffening in a bad position) by the sometimes years of malalignment that it can no longer be saved. It can therefore be stiffened in a correct position without functional loss.
  • If the ligament that prevents the toe from overstretching upwards is torn in the area of the metatarsophalangeal joint, it can be repaired. This often corrects the hammer toe at the same time.

Today, the results of these procedures can be described as very good - the days when hammer toes that had been operated on were just short stumps that deviated in all directions are definitely over.
