Hallux Valgus

What is hallux valgus?

The appearance of hallux valgus is well known: to put it simply, the first metatarsal bone deviates towards the centre of the body, usually as a result of splayfoot, and the big toe is pushed outwards due to the pressure of the shoes, among other things. This deformity can, of course, vary greatly in appearance, although the degree of deviation does not provide a conclusive indication of corresponding symptoms.

The most widespread deformity in the forefoot area mainly affects women in middle age.

Common symptoms

  • Pain in shoes, especially on the inside of the metatarsophalangeal joint (where a "bunion" can form due to the constant irritation)
  • Displacement of the smaller toes outwards/upwards with the formation of hammer toes
  • Unsteady gait due to the altered statics
  • Pain at rest

Treatment methods

The indication and method of surgical correction always depend on the patient's subjective feelings and are determined in a preparatory discussion.

It is important to know that with the methods and implants available today, the success rate of a hallux valgus correction is around 98%. The times when "hallux operations" had a correspondingly bad reputation due to poor results are definitely over.

The pain after the operation is kept within very narrow limits as a result of the advanced anaesthesia techniques that we use.
