Elbow instability

Injuries to the medial or lateral collateral ligaments can lead to elbow instability, pain and impaired function. Common causes include elbow dislocations, accidents or repeated heavy strain. Depending on the type, severity and duration of the injury, various treatment options may be considered.

In cases of severe instability, surgical stabilisation may be necessary. In some cases, fresh ligament injuries can be sutured immediately. For injuries that have persisted for some time, the damaged ligament can be replaced or reinforced using a tendon from the patient’s own body. The aim of treatment is to restore stability to the elbow, reduce pain and improve function.

Targeted follow-up care and physiotherapy are particularly important for a good outcome and are tailored individually to the injury and the patient’s physical requirements.
